MCCC - Answering the Call
April 12, 2018 | Timothy Peace
When the Lord called Samuel, as a boy, Samuel responded, ”Here I am.” - 1 Samuel 3:2-14
When you read the story of Samuel’s birth and his days as a youth, you realize that his call was out of the ordinary. The narrative of Samuel is juxtaposed with the story of the sons of Eli, Hophni, and Phinehas, two priests. It was Samuel, born to a woman who was previously barren, whom God called. The two sons of Eli, however, ”did not know the Lord.”
There are two observations to note from this story: (1) God isn't interested in prestige, or lack thereof, He's interested in a heart open to Him, and (2) Responding to God’s call is a big deal, but made up of small steps. He is the one the equips us to follow through when we respond to His call with ”Here I am.” In fact, He's the one who calls us. We have to be willing.
As we consider over the coming weeks what it means to be a Jesus-follower, remember to answer each opportunity, each step, with ”Here I am.”
