MCCC - Belong

My wife likes to tease me about how I mix up American sayings, like Ricky Ricardo in the TV show “I Love Lucy” or Balki Bartokomous in the show “Perfect Strangers.” I am not originally from America. I don’t say things quite correctly sometimes. But that is just me.
It does not stop me because I find these sayings are the best way to communicate wisdom. Here are some of my favorites:
“Love everybody, trust a few, paddle your own canoe.” - My mother quoting her Irish Nun school teacher
“Assume the best whilst scoping out the facts.” - Bob Russell
“Your system is perfectly designed to produce the results you are getting.” - Jeff Perrine quoting Andy Stanley
“When the storms are blowing, the ships stay in the harbor.” - My grandfather.
Here is a Didi Bacon original: “Belonging is the magic sauce.”
This is something that I have been saying recently regarding our church mission. People come to believe because they are invited to belong. This is the Jesus way. He said that He came to seek and to save the lost. He did it by intentionally inviting people to belong. Jesus continues this ministry through the church. As Jesus followers, we are to invite people into our lives so that we might share with them the love of God that will bring them to faith. Belonging leads to believing. If we are closed off to God, we will be closed off to others. If we are closed to others, then we are not open to God. I think this is what John was getting at when he said,
“This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him, there is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth; but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.” 1 John 1:5-10 (NASB)
Will you be open to God and walk in the light? Will you walk in the light being open to others?
I leave you with a final saying from C.S. Lewis. Lewis said -
“I believe in Christianity as I believe the Sun has risen, not only because I see it but because by it I see everything else.” The Weight of Glory. Christianity Today, Vol. 34, no. 13.
